Five tips on the fifth of each month: What five things can you do in one month to make a difference on your selling floor?

  1. Lighting is THE most important design element in any retail environment. Walk around your store and audit all your lighting. Most stores should have three levels of artificial lighting: ambient (general lighting), accent (track lighting) and decorative (fun pendants, floor lamps, etc). Do your lights fall into these categories?
  2. If not, which ones do you need to add?
  3. Are all your light bulbs working? If not, replace them.
  4. Are all  your accent lights aimed properly at focal point displays and merchandised fixtures? If not, aim them accordingly.
  5. Check the color temperature and lumen output of your light bulbs. Do they coordinate or do you have some warm 2700K and some cool 4100K. Ideally they should be 3500K unless your selling environment requires a different type of lighting to sell the merchandise (ie: furniture stores, jewelry stores), and lumen output above 1000.
