Focus Five: 5 Questions to Determine If It’s Time to Upgrade Your Storefront

By: Erin Raebel

Your storefront is often the very first impression customers have of your brand. Thoughtful storefront design choices can transform a passing glance into an invitation to explore, shop, and connect. Here are five questions to help determine if it’s time to upgrade your storefront.

1. Can people see my storefront from a distance?

Awnings provide powerful visual impact while providing shade and preventing window displays from fading. If you have awnings, take the time to assess them? Do they reflect your brand?  Are they clean and intact?  Is your logo displayed? Awnings in your brand colors reinforce your identity, make your store stand out, and become a memorable landmark for customers.

2. Do the materials on my exterior look fresh or worn?

Audit your exterior with fresh eyes. When did you last repaint? The sun can fade color over time. Could the color palette be updated to align with your branding and coordinate with your awnings?

Color sets a mood, helps you stand out, improves visibility, and creates a cohesive look that ties together windows, doors, and trim. Beyond aesthetics, paint helps shield surfaces from weather and wear, extending the life of the storefront and protecting your investment.

3. Does my storefront feel welcoming?

Inviting customers inside goes beyond paint. Urns and planters create a warm entryway while adding color and texture. Well-maintained arrangements show attention to detail and signal that the same intentional care extends inside. Seasonal updates add excitement and encourage repeat visitors.

4. How am I communicating to my customers?

Signage is critical. You are giving your customers valuable information and speaking to them before you even say “hello”. Does your signage identify your business clearly? Is it instantly recognizable and readable? Does it communicate business hours, website, and social media handles? Are there too many signs competing for attention?

While your main signage should be a long-term brand investment, adding window vinyl can upgrade seasonal looks and evolve with your retail offerings.

5. Can people see what I am trying to show them?

Poor lighting is common in retail storefronts. Proper lighting ensures your storefront, signage, and entry remain visible 24 hours a day. Use lighting intentionally to emphasize signage, entryways, window displays, and interior focal points that draw the eye. Mix lighting types like gooseneck directional lights, wall-mounted sconces, integrated sign lighting, and accent lighting for visual interest.

These five simple questions will help you know when to elevate your storefront. Before making storefront improvements, check with your landlord if you don’t own the building and verify city ordinances regarding signage, lighting, paint, or awnings.
