The final five of ten essential tips for window display success.
Welcome back to Focus Five: 5 Ways to Create Attention-Getting Window Displays! In Part I, we shared the first five essential tips to help you turn your storefront into a traffic-stopping showcase. Now, in Part II, we’re diving into the final five strategies that complete your toolkit for effective, eye-catching displays.
From lighting and signage to planning and budgeting, these tips will help ensure your displays don’t just attract attention—they hold it, engage curiosity, and inspire shoppers to step inside. Let’s take your window displays to the next level.
6. Consider Signage
Sometimes a display needs a sign to help sell the idea, product or event. The sign could sit on an easel in the window or be applied to the glass with vinyl decals. For pedestrian traffic, keep the signage at eye level or below. (If your windows are tinted, be sure to put the vinyl on the outside of the glass.) Keep signs simple with few words, seven or less if possible.
7. Add Illumination
Window displays should be illuminated 3x brighter than their surrounding ambient light to attract attention and provide visual pop. The eye is always attracted to the brightest spot in a space. This is especially important if the windows are tinted.
8. Change Often
Keep those passing by interested and intrigued by changing your window displays often, especially if you have a lot of repeat customers, are located on a busy street, or are in a busy mall. This could be as often as once a month but at a minimum, it should be five times a year: winter, spring, summer, fall, holiday. Keeping your displays fresh will entice people to wonder what you will do next and the displays will start selling themselves!
9. Create a Calendar
Use a calendar to schedule the planning, creating, and installation of the display. This helps you get organized and make time for the necessary tasks. Determine who will be in charge of each display. Generally, those who are creative, are eager to step up!
10. Define a Budget
Nothing significant gets done without some sort of budget. Window displays should be part of your advertising/marketing budget to ensure you always have money set aside to create amazing, traffic-stopping, conversation-starting window displays!
By applying all ten of these tips—from defining a bold theme to budgeting for visual impact—you’ll be well on your way to creating displays that captivate passersby, generate buzz, and ultimately boost your bottom line.
Remember: your windows are silent sellers. Keep them fresh, focused, and thoughtfully planned, and they’ll do the talking for you. Now’s the time to get creative, get strategic, and get those windows working as hard as you do!
