Focus Five: 5 Design Trends Shaping Retail in 2026

Design trends for 2026 aren’t about aesthetics, they’re about emotion.

Across design shows, showrooms, and conversations with makers and designers, a clear theme is emerging. The focus is leaning on giving people joy, nostalgia, a sense of calm, or form of sanctuary, while also delivering bold self-expression. It is giving people some measure of control in these turbulent times and creating feelings we can’t necessarily find in the outside world.

Understanding your consumers are seeking these emotional responses helps you and us create that experience and generate these emotions when they walk into your store.

Here are the five design trends we believe will shape retail environments in 2026 and how you can use them to create spaces that resonate.

  1. Nostalgia Escape

Bright and sunny colors, think of teals, turquoise, coral, that evoke Palm Springs and the swinging styles of the 1960s. These themes seem nostalgic and fun, creating a cocoon away from the modern world. Layer in South American and Mexican designs for that “iconoclash” vibe: lots of pattern mixing with retro fabrics and small prints that feel joyful and transportive.

  1. Traditionalism

This trend reaches for the craftsmanship of furniture and architecture from the times of your grandparents (or even great-grandparents), while bringing in special souvenirs that evoke travel. The update to traditionalism adds more color, especially moody hues of dark green, terra cotta, purples, and gold tones. It’s the evolution of the farmhouse style with lighter, more feminine florals and a touch of glamor.

  1. Curves and Ripples

Organic shapes continue to dominate, especially in mirrors and furniture with playful, curvy designs. These looks feel whimsical and approachable, particularly in 2026’s standout color pairings of maroons, oranges with blues; mustard with pink; grayed purples; and dusty pinks. It’s an updated nod to 80s Memphis Design (another nod to nostalgia), but with bold geometry meeting softer edges.

  1. Bare

Stripped down spaces with Scandinavian influences, but even more minimal. Whites and wood tones pair with organic materials and intentional texture. The evolution of this trend implies people are starting to remove technology from their environments to create wellness-focused spaces, especially in areas for young children.

  1. Drench

The total opposite of the Bare trend. Give us color! But use it intentionally and monochromatically. A maroon wall with a maroon sofa, maroon pillows, and a maroon area rug creates a bold, eye-catching statement. We anticipate less interest in straight-up maximalism that uses lots of colors in a space, and more one color, fully committed, room by room.

The goal is to understand the emotional undercurrents driving your customers’ preferences so you can make intentional design decisions that resonate. Don’t feel compelled to adopt all five trends. Maybe you lean into Nostalgia Escape for a spring window display that transports shoppers to a carefree Palm Springs afternoon. Or perhaps Drench makes sense for a signature jewelry case that demands attention. The key is making a design choice based on supporting the emotional experience your customers are seeking.

As you plan for 2026, ask yourself:

  • What feeling do I want customers to have when they walk into my space?

  • Which of these trends authentically connects with my brand story?

  • How can I layer in those details that show I understand what they’re craving right now?

When design decisions are rooted in emotional strategy rather than just what looks good, you create spaces that attract and keep customers coming back.
