Project Statement

The Historic King Drive BID district embarked on a comprehensive beautification project designed to celebrate its rich heritage while significantly improving the visitor experience. Retailworks was tasked with creating a cohesive visual identity that addressed the need for better navigation and district branding.

Our design solution included a suite of custom elements, from directional arrow signage and large-scale pedestrian maps to district-identifying lampost signs and prominent monument markers at key entry points. We developed three distinct design concepts, ultimately selecting a vibrant scheme inspired by the Jazz Age and the Harlem Renaissance, utilizing warm, bold colors and period-appropriate typography to honor the area’s cultural legacy.

The final result is a bright, inviting, and eye-catching streetscape that gives the district a distinct and memorable sense of place. A key feature of the transformation includes custom metal waste containers and benches finished in a signature bright orange, incorporating the BID’s logo for consistent branding. This project successfully balances form and function; historical markers throughout the district tell the region’s stories, while the new maps and directional signage help pedestrians easily discover local businesses and attractions. The monument signs now serve as iconic gateways that define the district’s boundaries while doubling as popular “selfie stations,” fostering modern community engagement through thoughtful, historically-inspired design.
